Below are the U-Pick orchards and farms for flowers that we know of in this area. Not all areas of any state, nor even every state, have flowers orchards that are open to the public. If you know of any others, please tell us using the add a farm form!

Conditions at the farms and crops can change literally overnight, so if you want to avoid a wasted trip out there - check with the farm directly before you go! If I cannot reach them, I DON'T GO!

Barbour County

Strawberry season runs from late March to early June. We offer U-pick and prepicked berries and grow two varieties. Blueberry season runs from early June-August. We offer Upick and prepicked berries! Peach season runs from early June-August. Every year we have a pumpkin patch and corn maze! We grow our own pumpkins including jack o' lanterns, white pumpkins, and fairy tale pumpkins! This year's fall events run from September 27- November 1. Take a wagon ride to the maze, sunflower, cotton, and pumpkin patch. The kids will enjoy playing in our cotton seed wagon and corn bins plus lots more! 2 and under are free. Admission includes one pumpkin per person! We grow many vegetables throughout the season. All a prepicked and sold in the barn. The fields are open to u-pick Tuesday-Saturday 9-5 and Sunday from 1-5. Muscadines are now available for u-pick or already picked . Oriental Persimmons and Kiwi are also available. They have lots of activities and tours. Run by family. 2 are Horticulturalists. 1 is Dr Arlie Powell, retired from Auburn University. We follow Dr. Powell's recommendations for growing blackberries on trellises for our farm. They also have Asian pears, muscadines, satsumas, lemons, kumquats, restrooms, gift shop, tours of the operation"
  Comments from a visitor on June 30, 2008: "Hello, My family and I stopped in Petals of the Past in Thorsby, Alabama to pick blueberries and blackberries yesterday. I have to admit, it's a really neat place, and it is obviously a well-operated business with a highly trained staff, but their prices for U-pick fruit are far higher (in some instances 3x higher) than most of others in the area. I felt slightly taken after paying 5.99 per lb. for u-pick fruit. This morning I called other listings on your site and learned that most were charging in the $6 to $10 range for a gallon of fruit. I know I should have done my homework, but I thought maybe you might want to note this in their listing. thanks" Note: $5.99 per lb is equivalent to about $16/gallon.

From Hwy 52 east in Slocomb,turn right onto North Morris street. Drive 2&1/2 miles, will be on your left. Crops are usually available in January, February, March, April, May, November, December. Flowers March-May We use natural practices, but are not yet certified Organic. We are the Wiregrass area's only vertical strawberry patch. Our berries are grown hydroponically in a greenhouse. They can be picked with no bending or kneeling! We also have lettuce, arugala, and herbs.

 

Flower Picking Tips, and Information

Farms that offer U-pick or pick-your-own flowers are becoming more common.

• Once picked, quickly get the stems into water
• Get them out of the hot sun after picking to increase shelf life.  Cool shade is best.
• Re-cut stems while underwater - once you get home. Making a fresh cut, while the cut end is submerged helps the stem to take up water and avoid a vapor lock.
