Notes for November 2024:Apples are usually January to May; Blueberries are ready in December to mid January in MOST areas of Australia. Strawberries can have a long season, November to April - depending on the variety. See your area's crop availability calendar for more specific dates of upcoming crops. This farm has been operating since 2008 and is open during the picking season from October to May. Ashbern Farms Stanthorpe offers a range of yummy treats, including our homemade ice cream. The harvest season is between 15th February and 15th May each year. Tours of olive grove are available! We also have fishing - bring your own fishing gear.
• Bundaberg's Macademia Nut Orchard - macadamia nuts,

Please be mindful that there is approximately 100m of uncovered walkway from the car park to the building. But don't bring pets, premises are not pet friendly. A pick-your-own macadamia orchard experience, an interactive learning centre, a working macadamia processing plant, a café showcasing gourmet macadamia cuisine.

They are full of educational value and children are also invited to pick their own of selected crops that are seasonally available. In 2018,. Tickets are $15 per adult. Children and students are free. No bookings required. Anyone wishing to participate, simply join us at the Top Fruit Stall at Freeman's Organic Farm at 10am. Gaeta it is a very lovely drive. They have a special “Pick Your Own” area, please bring a bucket and snips if you can to take home your flowers. They will have secateurs available but they will be in hot demand! Prices in 2023 for Sunflowers are $2 each. $1 from every sunflower sold goes directly to Queensland Cancer Council.

• Sunflower Sue’s Sunflower Farm - sunflowers
  OSHEA Road, Wamuran, QLD. Phone: 61 408 752 922. Open: Saturday and Sunday (only the weekends outside of school holidays) from 8am to 4pm, Saturday 5th November 8 am, Sunday 6th November 4 pm. We have a whole field of flowers (some are huge or multi stemmed) and they need to be picked. Wear your sunflower dresses and shirts, wear those sunflower earings and hats. Dress up! In 2022, It's $15 (cash only) entry fee for everyone 14 years and older and for that you get 7 flowers. But you have to pick them yourselves that's why you need the scissors. So bring your kids and grandmas and grandpas and anybody who loves these flowers. We're dog friendly too if it is on a lead.
  If it is torrential rain we will not open but you can check for updates on Facebook. We will open if it's only showers but prepare for a little mud. See you on the weekend and don't forget your scissors, or you can't cut them, or your CASH or you can't buy them. (ADDED: November 04, 2022, JBS)

Canning equipment
To can (bottle, jar) most acidic foods, like jams, jellies, salsa, fruit products like applesauce, apple butter, peaches, etc, you need the following:

A canner - a large pot, usually 33 qts, which can hold 7 quart jars or 12 8 ounce jars. And large pot with a lid will work, so long as each jar will be submerged by at least 1 inch of boiling water.
This is a good canner, and here is a canning kit, but Amazon seems to have difficulty keeping them in stock.
If you want to can low acid foods like canned green beans, sweet corn, meats, etc., you MUST use a pressure canner. It reaches higher temperatures which are needed to kill mold and botulism. The jars, lids and other equipment are the same.

Canning rack - The canning rack is critical, just be sure it fits inside your canning pot. It allows you to safely and easily lift the jars in and out of the canner.

Jar tongs (to pick up hot jars)
Jar funnel - good ones also help you measure the headspace and cover the rim from splashes
Canning Lid rack - to hold the lids while they are sanitizing in a small pot of boiling water

Supplies -
canning jars - these come in the modern lid and ring system and some older version. Most have change to the two piece lid and ring method since it ENORMOUSLY reduces spoilage. Like everything else, jars can be hard to obtain. Some commercial products, like spaghetti sauce, sometimes come in a sturdy jar that fits the standard lid and ring.
