 Johnny Food Strainer

(the same as the comparable Victorio V250, Villaware and Roma models, except it has both a clamp for counters and tables and a suction cup base)

I have this one with the electric motor and the extra screens.  You can do it by hand crank, but if you are doing large volumes, you will really want the electric motor.  Also, the additional screens, for berries for example are very, very useful!

  • Separates skin and seeds from pulp in tomatoes, berries, fruit.
  • The large hopper holds approximately 1 gallon of fruits or vegetables.
  • It comes with a dual-mount system with both a suction cup base or C-clamp
  • It comes with a stainless steel multi-purpose screen (1.5 mm) perfect for tomatoes and additional sizes are available for berries, squash, salsas, and grapes
  • It can use Roma / Villaware screens
  • Great for making sauces, canning, wine-making and making baby food.

See the seller's website for more information, features, pricing and user reviews!

Roots & Branches 811957010154 VKP250 EMW6698880, Basic Strainer, White

As near as I can tell, these are identical to the Victorio above, but sold separately, so accessories may vary.. I guess they are all made by the same manufacturer.  I have had not problem interchanging screens.

Roma / Weston Food Strainer (has a suction cup base)

Again, as near as I can tell, these are identical to the Victorio above

It looks like the VillaWare / Roma has been replaced by
Back to Basics

The Deluxe model comes with the standard Tomato/Apple Screen; as well as the Berry Screen, Pumpkin Screen, and Grape Spiral. Note: this one includes the screens, which are sold separately with the Villaware model (but the Villaware model and the accessory pack of screens together is still less expensive)

Squeezo All Metal Strainer -Designed for Tomatoes, but works for berry and fruit, like those above

UPDATE for 2020: It looks they aren't always availble on Amazon! The Squuezo strainer is very similar to the Roma / Villaware and Back to Basics. One big difference: it is all metal. It's also a lot more expensive, but looks like it would last several generations.  I believe the screens are interchangeable with the Roma, etc. but I have not been able to test that.

A visitor writes on August 25, 2014: "Greetings, FYI, the Squeezo Strainer, from serial manufacturers, is the original "tomato" strainer. Italian to USA, to Garden Way, to whoever now. IMHO, the Squeezo is superior because the auger is supported by a bushing at the discharge end of the screen rather than the screen itself supporting the auger. Regards, Tom

Squeezo parts are available on the manufacturers website.

Foley Food Mill (strainer)

Foley Food mills have been around for generations.  My grandmother had one.  It is a hand cranked strainer that looks like a sauce pan with a screened bottom.  It is excellent for applesauce and to remove seeds from blackberries. Almost anywhere you would use a colander or sieve, this will work better.

Old-Fashioned Food Colander / Strainer

This is just like the colander that my grandmother (and probably yours) used.  So many people have asked me where to get one of these, that I finally found one.  It looks very well made. On the other hand, I usually prefer the hand-crank or motorized strainers for anything but a small batch.

KitchenAid Attachments: Food Strainer

Add these to any of the KitchenAid's above, and in addition to the mixer dough maker and other attachments included you can make applesauce with ease, strain seeds from blackberries, make seedless/skinless tomato sauce and ketchup, make sausage grind and strain all kinds of fruits, vegetables and meats.

If you make more than a dozen jars of applesauce per year, it's worth it for that alone!

I've had mine for 20 years and make about 120 quarts of applesauce every year with it, so I know it works and holds up!

To use the strainer you will ALSO need the grinder, to which the strainer attaches. See the next item below:
