Where in South Carolina to find pick your own farms and orchards for fruit, vegetables, pumpkins and canning & freezing instructions!
This month's notes: May 2013: The cool weather has delayed blooms and slowed growth by a couple of weeks, but don't miss strawberries: they started in most Southern areas in late April, and in late May up north. Click here for strawberry facts and picking tips, and this page for easy strawberry jam making directions. Blueberries will come in June in most areas. Of course, Florida, southern Texas, and other very warm areas are already picking both crops! See this page for hundreds of easy canning and freezing instructions/recipes, canning equipment guide! Also make your own ice cream - see How to make ice cream and ice cream making equipment and manuals. Then see each state's crop availability calendar for more specific dates of upcoming crops. Organic farms are identified in green! See our guide to local fruit and vegetable festivals!. Please tell the farms you found them here - and ask them to update their information!!

Comments from a visitor on August 01, 2010: "We found this farm/property from signs posted on Highway 130 heading up to the North Carolina mountains this weekend. The owner, Paul, is eager to get the word out and does not know how to do it. (I would not be surprised if he did not have internet access.) From my memory, I'd say it was around Salem, SC but because it was my first drive up this way, I'm not sure. The property was less than a mile off of the state road. What we loved about the property was that it is all "organic" though not officially. The only thing he uses to grow his rows and rows of mature bushes is rainwater. He'll never get enough traffic for all of his blueberries to pick and he's begging for people to come so that the birds do not get all of the spoils. Paul was as nice and friendly as could be. He provided the white picking buckets and charged us $9/bucket, which was very reasonable. (We used the same buckets at Southern Belle Farm here in Georgia and paid $10 per for strawberries.) I could have picked all day if my three kids weren't hot and hungry after an hour. He provided us with water to drink and my five-year-old even helped him prune some of his bushes. The blueberries are amazing. My two-year-old kept picking and eating! This farm was the only one we saw as a "pick-your-own" on this road. Paul has a sign right at the left turn-off off of 130 that takes you to a quick left turn to get to his property. We were doubtful since it was an instantaneous decision but once we came to the property and met Paul and his blueberries, we were thrilled beyond belief. I should have gotten more info from him but our kids were shot and ready for some lunch so we ended up making a quick exit. Hope you can find his location. He's eager to get the word out and he has so many mature blueberries that I hope others, other than the immediate locals, can enjoy them too!" -

We were told about the inability for Windy Hill to sell cider, but the person was very pleasant about it. We purchased our u-pick bags and had a great time picking in the orchard. We feed and watched the chickens and rooster. Then we all had a great time petting the pig with her new born piglets and watching a funny goat. It is not a fancy place, but we had a great time. The apples were great as applesauce too.

A visitor writes "Produce is picked and taken to the stand daily for people to purchase. Very fresh. A wonderful cafe and ice cream parlor is located across road from market. They grow over 800 acres of peaches, 80 acres of strawberries and then those 80 acres are then replanted with cantaloupes. I have purchased peaches from the farm long before it had the nice road side market it now has. Even then, as now, it is a very friendly place where you purchase extremely good produce. The produce is tree or vine ripe so you must remember that and not let it stay in your car in the heat. They also carry the baskets of berries or peaches to your car for you. Be sure to stop at the cafe for breakfast or lunch and try some of their homemade ice creams." (ADDED: July 15, 2008)
