This month's notes: May 2013: The cool weather has delayed blooms and slowed growth by a couple of weeks, but don't miss strawberries: they started in most Southern areas in late April, and in late May up north. Click here for strawberry facts and picking tips, and this page for easy strawberry jam making directions. Blueberries will come in June in most areas. Of course, Florida, southern Texas, and other very warm areas are already picking both crops! See this page for hundreds of easy canning and freezing instructions/recipes, canning equipment guide! Also make your own ice cream - see How to make ice cream and ice cream making equipment and manuals. Then see each state's crop availability calendar for more specific dates of upcoming crops. Organic farms are identified in green! See our guide to local fruit and vegetable festivals!. Please tell the farms you found them here - and ask them to update their information!!

Comments from a visitor on June 02, 2011: "On the second day the strawberry fields are open, we go to pick. The fields were full of weeds, no mounds or plastic under the plants and the plants were about six inches high with small berries and few white developing. It is obvious that the field received NO care. It was such a waste! When I asked about the deplorable condition, was told: too much rain, fertilizer "washed off", too cold, etc. They charge $1.99/lb. to pick which is O.K. What I did not like was they send their migrant workers into the fields to pick berries so they can sell them for $4.59/qt. I have been picking for 68 years and have NEVER seen such miserable fields. Beware!"
Comments from a visitor on July 18, 2008: "I liked it quite a bit. The cherry trees were so laden with fruit, I was able to pick 50lbs of perfectly ripe cherries from 3 trees. I also go there for the pre-picked fruit, which is cheaper and better quality then what is available at the grocery store." (ADDED: July 18, 2008)
