  • Gilcrease Orchard - fruit and vegetables: apples, peaches, figs, apricots, plums, cherries, apples, pears, melons, tomatoes, zucchini, peppers, okra, eggplant, several kinds of squash and pumpkins
7800 N. Tenaya Way, Las Vegas, NV. Phone: 702-645-1126. Open 7 am to noon daily, May to December. Directions: take U.S. 95 north to Ann Road, exit, loop left to Tenaya Way. See this page for a map and directions.  www.SaveGilcrease.com , the unofficial web site for a citizen’s grass roots effort to protect the valley’s only operating orchard, the Gilcrease Orchards, which is located just a few minutes north on Highway 95 in Centennial Hills, the Northwest Las Vegas Valley. "1000's of our elementary school children visit these orchards annually. It's the only Orchard in over 200 miles. The Clark County School District is planning on placing an urban high school directly adjacent to these Gilcrease  Orchards.  That CCSD request for this facility has been unanimously denied by the Las Vegas Planning Commission on two occasions. Despite the planning commission request the CCSD plans to appeal the decision directly to the City Council."  The website continues: 'Their attitude as represented by the CCSD development coordinator, Matt LaCroix,  is "...If the orchards survive, it survives and if it doesn't, it doesn't".   Also, to paraphrase a government member in Ward-6, " ...The CCSD will get what it wants no matter the wishes of the people or the decisions of the Planning Commission or City Council." '

Offering an opposing view, another visitor writes: "CCSD has no intention of trying to destroy the orchard or run them out of town. Quite to the contrary, the high school they are building is going to be an agricultural magnet school with plans to work closely with the orchard in their program. That is why they chose that specific site location because it is so close to the only orchard, not because CCSD is some big, evil deity. Construction has been going on for years in that part of the valley but you offer nothing negative against the home developers who's intention is clearly to make as much space for new houses and they would love nothing more than to level the orchard and build a new housing track on it. Or the County who plans to build a major highway through that part of the valley also. "

So, depending upon who you listen to, the proposed school will either destroy or help preserve the orchard.  Being so far away, I can't tell you who's right; but I'd certainly urge those of you who live there to get involved and try to sort it out in a way that preserves the orchard for the future.
